Peonies of Sweet Gum Hill

We have several varieties: 


First, the most prolific. These things will take over your whole bed if you don't keep them thinned back. Let's call this variety the "Assistant Dean:"

 

Next, the "PhD Candidate."  This variety, a specter haunting the beds, has a heart of gold and is otherwise entirely red: 



Let's call this one the "Tenured Radical:"  If the wind is blowing just right, you might see one or two of these peeping up from under the rest of the flowers in the bed. Note the light pink cape surrounding the yellow center petals:




Here is the "Public Intellectual:" 


The "undergrad" comes in many colors. Below you can see one white, a couple of burgundy a pink and a bright yellow. They can survive in almost any soil or climate condition. This variety will always surprise you if you are patient with their individual blossoming schedules. You will note the wire cages around the plants. Although strong and healthy, this variety requires support through rain storms.
